Asymptotic Curves and Geodesics on Surfaces

In this chapter we begin a study of special curves lying on surfaces in R. An asymptotic curve on a surface M ⊂ R is a curve whose velocity always points in a direction in which the normal curvature of M vanishes. In some sense, M bends less along an asymptotic curve than it does along a general curve. As a simple example, the straight lines on the cylinder (u, v) 7→ (cosu, sinu, v) formed by s...

Asymptotic Behavior of Geodesics in Gowdy Spacetimes

Recent work by the authors led to the development of a mathematical theory dealing with 'second– order hyperbolic Fuchsian systems', as we call them. In the present paper, we adopt a physical standpoint and discuss the implications of this theory which provides one with a new tool to tackle the Einstein equations of general relativity (under certain symmetry assumptions). Specifically, we formu...

Configurations of curves and geodesics on surfaces

We study configurations of immersed curves in surfaces and surfaces in 3-manifolds. Among other results, we show that primitive curves have only finitely many configurations which minimize the number of double points. We give examples of minimal configurations not realized by geodesics in any hyperbolic metric.

Asymptotic Expansion for Closed Geodesics in Homology Classes

In this paper we give a full asymptotic expansion for the number of closed geodesics in homology classes. Especially, we obtain formulae about the coefficients of error terms which depend on the homology class. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification. 37C27, 37C30, 37D40, 35B40.

Asymptotic Approximation of Convex Curves

L. Fejes Tóth gave asymptotic formulae as n → ∞ for the distance between a smooth convex disc and its best approximating inscribed or circumscribed polygons with at most n vertices, where the distance is in the sense of the symmetric difference metric. In this paper these formulae are extended by specifying the second terms of the asymptotic expansions. Tools are from affine differential geometry.
